You don't have to drink tonight. By Alyson Premo.

The booziest night of the year is upon us in the U.S., and I wanted to remind you just because you've always drank on Thanksgiving Eve doesn't mean you have to tonight.

How empowering will it be to choose differently tonight?

How proud of yourself are you going to be when you wake up tomorrow WITHOUT feeling like garbage?

No more hair of the dog needed on Thanksgiving just to make you feel "normal". Do you even understand how ridiculous that is?

"Let me intentionally poison myself, and then because I'm going through withdrawal, let me ingest more poison to feel okay." Like WTF!!!

How is this living?

IT'S NOT.

And you're fooling yourself if you think it is. I was trapped for too long because I thought it was normal to wake up hungover and start drinking early on holidays. After all, that's what everyone else did.

Who came up with this absurd rule?

And that's the thing all these "rules" or beliefs aren't even real. 🀯

Once your eyes get opened to how you've been duped, it's impossible not to unsee it, and that's how you start breaking out of this drinking pattern.

I don't know about you, but my choice to not drink is empowering AF.

I know it can be hard to see that initially, but stop looking at it as a punishment and start looking at it as a damn gift because it is.

It's the gift that keeps on giving to you, to your family, to society, and for generations to come.

Sober Thanksgiving Week. By Alyson Premo.

Thanksgiving week used to be about stocking up on booze, hangovers, and blurred memories. Now it's about filling up on food made with love, binging Christmas movies, and making memories that I won't' forget by the morning.

It's Thanksgiving week here in the U.S., which for a lot of people means travel, eating lots of food, spending time with family that maybe we don't even want to be around, and an excuse to start drinking early in the morning because it's socially acceptable during a holiday right?

Everything holds true for us alcohol free people except for starting the drinking early and going all day long because we're f*cking badasses who don't need a substance to make it through anything.

❌ The in-laws who drive you nuts? Don't need alcohol for that!

❌ The preparing of the meal with sips (or gulps) of wine in between basting the turkey, making the mashed potatoes, and all the fixings? Don't need alcohol for that!

❌ Kids bouncing off the walls from all the overstimulation? Don't need alcohol for that!

❌ Relaxing when everyone is in bed, and you can finally sit your butt on the couch with a movie? Don't need alcohol for that either!

All these things that we could've sworn we wouldn't be able to get through without alcohol, yet here we are doing the damn thing without booze, and for myself at 5 years sober, not even thinking about alcohol.

If this is your first Thanksgiving, not drinking it may be uncomfortable, but give it a chance. It's not as bad as you think it will be. Hey, you may even have fun with the kids and family. Imagine that? πŸ˜‰

πŸŽ‚ And waking up the day after Thanksgiving without a hangover is icing on the cake.

Just thinking about those Fridays waking up with cotton mouth, nauseous, anxiety through the roof, and wondering wtf I said or did the day before makes me cringe right now and wonder why I waited so damn long to stop drinking.

If you're waiting to stop drinking take this as your sign to do it before you're ready because you're never going to be ready.

The freedom you're looking for isn't at the bottom of the bottle. It's in the feelings you're avoiding.

Why do most of us get trapped in this cycle? Because we don't want to feel.

We don't want to feel sadness, anxiety, grief, and all the so-called "bad" emotions. But that's all part of being human, right?

At a young age, I learned that crying was considered a sign of weakness. Big girls don't cry. Big girls handle their problems with a smile on their face. Sigh. It's unfortunate, but that's the way parenting was done back in the day.

All that resisting, avoiding, and suppressing isn't doing any of us favors in the long run. I was never taught how to handle these tough emotions, so later in life, I turned to alcohol to make them go away. What I didn't know was they weren't going away; they were festering and eating me alive.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Even when removing the alcohol, we think that there's a way to get rid of the negative emotions or bad days, but there isn't.

"The only way out is through." It's cliche, but it's so true. Once we allow ourselves to feel whatever we're feeling. We can release it and then move on. There's nothing wrong with you for feeling sad or having a bad day. It's just part of life. Allow yourself to feel the spectrum of emotions. That's what makes us human. That's what lets us appreciate pure joy.

5 YEARS SOBER. By Alyson Premo.

I couldn't go one day without drinking, thinking about drinking, or hungover. Now here I am 5 YEARS SOBER, sharing my story and helping tens of thousands of women examine their relationship with alcohol and normalizing sobriety.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» I binge drank in college because that's what everyone did. No harm in kids just being kids without their parents around, right? I went to classes and got A's, so nothing was wrong with my drinking.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» I got my first "real" job and drank on the weekends. Got a little too tipsy at work events or happy hours, but I was fine, and everyone did thatβ€”no harm in letting loose.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» I went out on dates, blacked out, and couldn't remember how I ended up in bed with random men. Memes say that's funny, so I'm good.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» I became a single mom at 26 and was told the way to get rid of the overwhelm and stress was to have some wine. That's how all parents get through motherhood, right?

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Both my grandparents died in a 9-month span, and I used alcohol not to have to deal with their loss. Nothing wrong with that; everyone uses alcohol to numb out their pain.

No one warns you about the progression from being a social drinker to someone with Alcohol Use Disorder.

No one warns you about how badly you want to stop drinking, but you just can't.

No one warns you that alcohol will make you become a shell of a human being.

No one warns you that breaking up with booze will be one of the hardest things you will have to undertake in this lifetime.

❌ All the suppressed emotions and trauma I shoved down for a decade came to the surface on November 14, 2016, and that was the day I said I'm ready to face my demons and walked into detox. The hardest and best day of my life because now I no longer need alcohol to live.

BECAUSE I'M F*CKING FREE.

I share my story as a warning to you, and this isn't to scare you. This is to wake you the f*ck up to what could happen if you continue to let yourself off the hook. If you continue to normalize drinking because that's what others do, or that's what you've been conditioned to believe.

You are made for so much more than continually escaping with alcohol. By Alyson Premo.

I know many of us have at one point or another googled, "Am I an alcoholic?"

Chances are if you're googling that, then your relationship with alcohol isn't healthy. Notice I don't use the label alcoholic because that can hinder some from truly stopping, especially those who are more gray area drinkers. Since they haven't had any real negative consequences, they may talk themselves into not having a problem.

The only requirement to stop drinking is that you feel it isn't serving you anymore. Whether that be the once a month hangover, the anxiety you get after even just having one glass of wine, or knowing that alcohol prevents you from furthering your goals.

But this isn't what this post is really about. This is about...trust.

Trusting your gut.

Trusting your inner guide that something is off.

Trusting that nudge at 3 am that something needs to change.

Trusting that you were made for more than just going through the daily motions of life.

Trusting that it's time for you to heal from your past.

Trusting that it's time to let go.

What if you invested in yourself as much as you invested in alcohol? By Alyson Premo.

And I'm not just talking about money. The time and energy we put into keeping alcohol in our lives is ridiculous.

Think about it.

How much ENERGY does it take to go back and forth about whether you're going to drink or not?

How much TIME have we lost with our kids due to hangovers?

How much TIME have we wasted by focusing on wine instead of focusing on being present with our kids?

The day I found peace on this sober journey was the day I finally accepted alcohol couldn't be a part of my life anymore.

How many of us time and time again try everything we can to keep alcohol in our lives?

Things we say like...

βœ‹πŸ» "It's just a habit. Nothing more than that. I can control how much I have or when I can drink."

βœ‹πŸ» "I just want to have alcohol here or there or on special occasions."

Why do we do this? Why do we convince ourselves that all we need is a break or to cut back, and we'll be fine? Maybe for some of you, that's the case, but for most of us, it doesn't work like that.

Instead of constantly going back and forth, hating yourself, and trying so hard to keep a toxic substance in your life, why don't you use that same energy to get rid of it?
