One of the many perks of sobriety. By Alyson Premo.

One of the many perks of sobriety:

Knowing I can pick my child and his friends up at any time of night.

It's the weekend, and you know what that means - kid's sports and activities. And for those moms whose kids can't drive yet, what does that mean? Carting them around everywhere.

Let's be real. I enjoy being in my bed by 9 pm but knowing that I can pick my child and his friends up whenever they need feels good and is the definition of a responsible parent.

While I'm an introvert and strive off of one-on-one conversations and being home rather than in big groups, my son is the complete opposite. He's a total extrovert and thrives off being surrounded by others. And he is constantly on the go, which for an 11-year-old, who does that mean drives him around everywhere?

You guessed it, ME.

I can't even imagine if I was drinking. I'd be irritable that I couldn't start drinking earlier, or I'd have a few drinks and then drive them around.

❌ How unsafe and irresponsible would that be? Just to preface, I did that back in the day, and that is one thing that's taken me a while to let go of. The guilt, regret, and shame from that can be crippling, but nothing I can do about it now but be the parent my child needs and deserves.

I sometimes wonder if other parents who know my story or who have creeped me on social media deem me as an unsafe parent because of my past, but that's a topic for another day.

But right now, I'm grateful that my son gets to do what he loves, which is watching sports teams in town, being with his friends, and playing soccer.

If I were still drinking, he wouldn't be able to enjoy all of this, and neither would I. Grateful for this sober life every single day!
